The new edition of the Cologne Boxing World Cup is held on March 11-13 with impressive boxers in the line-ups. Germany’s top international competition welcomes AIBA World Champions, medallists from AIBA and Olympic events this week.
Brazil’s defending AIBA Women’s World Champion Beatriz Ferreira, Germany’s World Champion Ornella Wahner and experienced two-time World Championships bronze medalist Nadine Apetz, Netherlands’ Olympic Games silver medallist Nouchka Fontijn, bronze medalists of the AIBA World Championships France’s Billal Bennama, Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossynov and two-time silver medalist Kamshybek Kunkabayev, as well as Germany’s super heavyweight (+91kg) star Nelvie Tiafack are attending the tournament.
History of the Cologne Boxing World Cup
The Chemistry Cup, which was also known as Chemiepokal, has got nearly 50 years of traditions in our sport. The first edition of the Chemistry Cup was held in 1970 and since then such big stars as Cuba’s three-time Olympic Champion Teofilo Stevenson and moreover the two German stars Henry Maske, Dariusz Michalczewski, Cuba’s Juan Hernandez, Cuba’s active star Andy Cruz and Kazakhstan’s legend Vasiliy Zhirov all claimed gold medals in the history of the event.
The 2018 edition was a small World Championships in Halle with the participation of such top countries as Cuba, the United States, India, Russia, Ukraine, Ireland, Moldova, Poland, Jordan and host Germany. The number of boxers was 95 from 16 strong countries in the 45th Chemistry Cup where Cuba headed the team rankings.
The Cologne Boxing World Cup became the new official name of the Chemistry Cup in 2019 and moved from Halle to Cologne. It was a powerful event once again with the participation of 21 nations and 160 boxers including 46 women athletes two years ago. Key nations in the boxing world such as Cuba, Russia, England, France, Thailand, Mongolia, India, China, Ireland, Australia, Poland, Netherlands, Romania, Wales, Denmark, Armenia, Norway, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Finland and host Germany attended the new edition of the Cologne Boxing World Cup.
The 2020 edition of the Cologne Boxing World Cup has been rescheduled twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic but finally was held in the month of December. Altogether 72 boxers including 21 women attended the 2020 edition of the Cologne Boxing World Cup in Germany with many of the European and Asian stars on the board.
