AIBA today reiterated its support for refugee boxers and the work of the UNHCR as the international federation celebrated World Refugee Day. A number of high profile refugee boxers, some having competed at the AIBA Boxing World Championships have led the way in showing how boxing can serve the fight for social justice.
“Far too many have had to flee their countries to escape conflict, social unrest and even persecution. Boxing has shown it can provide a safe haven and a better future for refugees who are fighting for better futures and AIBA will continue its efforts to support them,” said AIBA President Umar Kremlev.
AIBA recently encouraged its member federations and continental confederations to consider the objectives of the UNHCR on refugees and sport when creating projects eligible for development funding. Member federations are also encouraged to find ways to support refugee boxers, regardless of whether they are fighting under the flag of their former homes, their new homes or that of a refugee team.
