Scotland won its first ever medal in the AIBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships in Belgrade last November and the country bagged a bronze at the EUBC European Men’s Elite Boxing Championships in Yerevan this May. Both of their medallists such as Reese Lynch and Samuel Hickey will be there in the upcoming Commonwealth Games which will take place in Birmingham.
Scotland claimed two bronze medals in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games which was the last edition of the multisport event. Scotland’s best boxers earned altogether 17 gold, 16 silver and 32 bronze medals in the history of the Commonwealth Games between 1930 and 2018. The country is Rank No.4 in the overall boxing medal table behind England, Canada and Australia but Scotland is ahead of the Republic of South Africa, Northern Ireland, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, India, Uganda, New Zealand, Wales and Zambia.
Scotland hosted the 2014 edition of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow when Charlie Flynn and Josh Taylor earned gold medals for them. Scotland’s boxing management selected one female and seven male boxers to the Commonwealth Games and all of them are medal hopefuls in Birmingham. Two of their current team members have experience from the last edition of the Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games is one of the top multisport events next to the Olympic Games and European Games and after four years of break, the competition returns to the agenda. Altogether 55 out of the 72 participating NOCs will be competing in the boxing event of the upcoming Commonwealth Games from all of the five Confederations. The first competition day of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England will be July 29 and the finals to be hosted on August 7.
Scotland joined the female part of the sport in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the Women’s World Boxing Championships in that year. Their lone selected female boxer, Megan Reid participated in the recent IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul and she was quarter-finalist in Ulan-Ude in 2019.
All of their male boxers have 4-7 years of international experiences and Boxing Scotland is hoping to earn top results in Birmingham. World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Reese Lynch is only 21 but he is one of the stars of the light welterweight (63.5kg) and member of the GB programs. EUBC European Boxing Championships bronze medallist Samuel Hickey, the quarter-finalist from Yerevan, Matthew McHale and the most experienced squad member, Sean Lazzerini are strong favourites in Birmingham.
