Eight contests were held in the second competition day at the Moldavian Belt Tournament in Iasi. The Romanian Boxing Federation’s fourth international competition delivered excellent youth and elite contests on Day2 when Moldova’s Davron Bozorov impressed with his technical skills.
Iasi is a university city in Eastern Romania near to the boarder of Moldova and it has the population of more than 300,000. The Moldavian Belt Tournament is an international competition for the elite women, elite men and youth men boxers in Iasi. The Technical Delegate of the Moldavian Belt Tournament is Mr. Dragoljub Radovic of Montenegro.
The competition could be also preparation for the youth boxers on their road to the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships which will be held in La Nucia-Benidorm on November 13-27. The venue of the Moldavian Belt Tournament is the Polivalenta Hall in the city of Iasi and the IBA Scoring System and Technical Rules use during the competition.
The bout of the day
Moldova sent a young team to the recent EUBC European Men’s Elite Boxing Championships to Yerevan and one of their team members, Davron Bozorov won his first preliminary contest in the Round of 32. Bozorov has an Uzbek father but he was born and raised in Moldova where he received the rights to compete in the international tournaments. The currently 22-year-old boxer opened his campaign in Iasi against Romania’s Sebastian Nitu and he had nice combinations in the first round. The Romanian light middleweight (71kg) boxer was a competitive rival in their meeting but Bozorov’s technical skills and higher rhythm decided their contest.
The Round-Up
Hungary’s EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships bronze medallist Levente Gemes spends his first year in the youth age group but he won several international contests against top rivals. The 17-year-old Hungarian has a busy schedule in 2022 and the Moldavian Belt Tournament is his next competition. Gemes controlled the first round against Romania’s Adrian Gheorghe and took the lead on the judges’ scorecards. The Hungarian light middleweight (71kg) boxer was not satisfied with his performance on Day2 but he had the clear success over his Romanian local opponent.
Oleksandr Khoma participated in the Ukrainian junior national events in 2018 and in 2019 but following that, he switched to Hungary. The 18-year-old boxer lives and trains in the city of Gyor and represents Hungary for the very first time out of the country. Khoma won the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament in Eger two months ago and he showed his impressive power in the second day of boxing. Romania’s George Boriga was not able to accept the tempo of this middleweight (75kg) contest and his ringside abandoned their fight.
Ukraine’s Ihor Kovtun faced Romania’s 19-year-old Samuel Roman in the next stage of the elite light welterweight (63.5kg) in Iasi. The Romanian won his first contest on Day1 but Kovtun was smarter and stopped his attacks effectively. Roman was never stopped attacking but Kovtun had enough experiences and number of bouts to handle this tactical job in Iasi. Another Ukrainian youngster, Maksim Molodan, who moved up to the light middleweight (71kg), impressed in the Moldavian Belt Tournament on Day2. Molodan was confident from the first seconds against Romania’s Marcel Nistreanu and won their contest unanimously.
Andrei Mustet achieved a bronze medal at the light welterweight (63.5kg) in the 2021 EUBC Youth European Boxing Championships. The Romanian teenager moved up to the welterweight (67kg) and since January, he is eligible to compete in the U22 and elite age groups. The 19-year-old boxer made his debut in the international elite events in Iasi and he had the speed and strength to beat Maksim Zhyharov of Ukraine on Day2.
